7 Best Backpacker Hostels in Greymouth

Well, this is awkward. There are only three backpacker hostels in Greymouth, which doesn’t give you a thorough “best backpacker hostels” list! However, there are some fantastic hostels with a maximum of 40-minutes drive away that are well worth considering when exploring the Greymouth, Hokitika and Punakaiki areas of the West Coast. There’s so much to do along this section of the West Coast, that you will definitely want to split up your days between hostels.

With relaxing hostels by the sea, backpackers nestled in native forest, and quirky themed hostels in the city to give you a great base for exploration, you’ll always have something to look forward to after a day of being a badass backpacker.

Just outside the town of Hokitika and only 30 minutes away from Greymouth, Birdsong is a small and comfortable hostel that’s great for escaping towns and cities. 5. Mountain Jade Backpackers (Hokitika)

Just 30 minutes south of Greymouth, in the centre of Hokitika, is the Mountain Jade Backpackers. The small hostel has a sunny lounge, a newly refurbished kitchen, and welcoming hosts keen to give you recommendations and local insights.

6. Te Nikau Retreat (Punakaiki)

Not too far from the hikes, caves and Pancake Rocks and only being 40-minutes drive north of Greymouth, Punakaiki Beach Hostel is a great backpacker option on the West Coast.
