With one of New Zealand’s top regional museums and home to the oldest tuatara and the “Southland Sushi”, Invercargill certainly has a character of its own! Whether you are here to visit its many city attractions or calling it your base for your working holiday, it’s likely that you’re going to need to find cheap accommodation in Invercargill.

WHICH Invercargill DISTRICT TO FIND ACCOMMODATION?

Note: CBD  refers to “Central Business District” i.e. Invercargill city centre.

  • Appleby– Location: southwest of CBD, Distance from CBD: 8min drive/17min walk. Average weekly rent for a room: NZ$120.
  • Ascot – Location: east of CBD, Distance from CBD: 4min drive/55min walk, Average weekly rent for a room: NZ$110.
  • Clifton – Location: south of CBD, Distance from CBD: 6min drive/1hour walk, , Average weekly rent for a room: NZ$90.
  • Georgetown – Location: south of CBD, Distance from CBD: 3min drive/25min walk, Average weekly rent for a room: NZ$140.
  • Gladstone – Location: north of CBD, Distance from CBD: 6min drive/32min walk, Average weekly rent for a room: NZ$190.

Hostels in Invercargill

There are three backpacker hostels in Invercargill all located close to the city centre, which are:

  • Tuatara Backpackers – a large basic backpackers in the city centre on top of a cool cafe. Prices start at NZ$25 per night.
  • Karon Court Backpackers – a small and quiet BBH hostel in the centre of Invercargill. Prices start at NZ$29 per night.
  • Southern Comfort – a homely BBH hostel in the Queens Park suburb. Prices start at NZ$31 per night.

Renting a room in Invercargill

Renting a room is common practice in Invercargill to keep the price to minimum when staying in Invercargill long-term, usually done if you have landed a job in Invercargill as part of a working holiday.

Rooms for rent can be found all over the city, even in the city centre. Invercargill is known to be one of the cheapest cities to find a room for rent in New Zealand with rent usually being between NZ$80 and NZ$150 per week.

AirBnb in Invercargill

Stay with a local in Invercrgill! You’ll be having Southland Cheese Rolls (or Southland Sushi) every night! AirBnB, the online network of people’s “spare rooms” available for accommodation, is relatively popular in convenient locations in and around Invercargill. However, you may struggle to find AirBnB rooms at backpacker prices with the average AirBnB room in Invercargill being NZ$114. Saying that, there are a limited number of shared rooms starting from NZ$29 per night. Your first night with Airbnb is on us with this FREE NZ$45 Airbnb credit!

Campgrounds and Holiday Parks in Invercargill

Although Southland offers many freedom camping spots, freedom camping in prohibited in Invercargill itself. However, there are a few holiday park options with tent sites and powersites. Invercargill’s holiday park offerings are relatively dispersed throughout the suburbs. Places you can camp or plug in your campervan are:

  • Central City Camping Park in Georgetown with prices starting from NZ$18
  • Invercargill Top 10 Holiday Park in Waikiwi with prices starting from NZ$42
  • Beach Road Holiday Park in West Invercargill with prices starting from NZ$21
  • Amble On Inn Holiday Park in Kingswell with prices starting from NZ$17.50
  • Lorneville Lodge and Holiday Park in Lorneville with prices starting from NZ$22
