7 Best Walks at Farewell Spit

Walking and Hiking trails at Farewell Spit

Explore the magnificent coastline at the top of the South Island on these walks at Farewell Spit. Farewell Spit is one of New Zealand’s most protected areas, providing important wetland habitat for a wealth of New Zealand birds and marine mammals. It’s more protected than a national park, meaning that access to the spit is limited up to a certain point for hikers, which is clearly marked on the spit. Otherwise, there’s much more to discover along this coastline in an area known as the Puponga Farm Park. See the picturesque Wharariki Beach with its Archway Islands, the dramatic coastal cliffs of Cape Farewell and Pillar Point Lighthouse.

Find Farewell Spit at the northwest tip of the South Island in Golden Bay. While you’re here, you might also be interested in 19 Epic Natural Attractions in Golden Bay and 10 Golden Bay Must-Dos.
