7 Best Backpacker Hostels in Greymouth

Well, this is awkward. There are only three backpacker hostels in Greymouth, which doesn’t give you a thorough “best backpacker hostels” list! However, there are some fantastic hostels with a maximum of 40-minutes drive away that are well worth considering when exploring the Greymouth, Hokitika and Punakaiki areas of the West Coast. There’s so much to do along this section of the West Coast, that you will definitely want to split up your days between hostels.

With relaxing hostels by the sea, backpackers nestled in native forest, and quirky themed hostels in the city to give you a great base for exploration, you’ll always have something to look forward to after a day of being a badass backpacker.

So here’s what we think are the best backpacker hostels in Greymouth, Hokitika and Punakaiki!

1. Noah’s Ark Backpackers

It’s fun theme is one of the perks of this backpacker hostel in Greymouth. Which animal room will you end up staying in?! We also enjoy their game selection and free breakfast, as well as jamming on their piano and guitars.

2. Duke Hostel

A colourful hostel in the centre of Greymouth, you can’t do better for convenience. With spacious common areas, a kitchen equipped with more than you need, and plenty of instruments to jam on, there’s plenty of reasons to stay at Duke’s.

3. Global Village Backpackers

With global artwork around every corner, this make for quite an interesting hostel. Make use of the free kayak and bike hire. At the end of the end, relax in the spa pool!

4. BirdSong Backpackers (Hokitika)

Just outside the town of Hokitika and only 30 minutes away from Greymouth, Birdsong is a small and comfortable hostel that’s great for escaping towns and cities. Surrounded by bush, you’ll understand how the hostel got its name. It’s so wild it even has a “Bushman’s Bath”.

5. Mountain Jade Backpackers (Hokitika)

Just 30 minutes south of Greymouth, in the centre of Hokitika, is the Mountain Jade Backpackers. The small hostel has a sunny lounge, a newly refurbished kitchen, and welcoming hosts keen to give you recommendations and local insights.

6. Te Nikau Retreat (Punakaiki)

A 40-minute drive north from Greymouth is the Te Nikau Retreat in Punakaiki. The backpackers nestled in native New Zealand rainforest is like no other in New Zealand. If you love the feeling of being in the wilderness, then this is your place.

7.  Punakaiki Beach Hostel (Punakaiki)

Not too far from the hikes, caves and Pancake Rocks and only being 40-minutes drive north of Greymouth, Punakaiki Beach Hostel is a great backpacker option on the West Coast. With a stallar beachfront location, heaps of games, outdoor seating area, colourful decor… (not to mention, there’s so much to do in Punakaiki), you’ll probably want to stay for a few days.
