5 Reasons to Be Open Minded When Choosing a Job in New Zealand

Be open minded to make your job search quick and painless!

Want to find a job quickly in New Zealand? The number one rule, which applies to every backpacker job hunting is be open minded in your choice of jobs! Too many times you meet backpackers who have been job searching for weeks because: “No one is hiring gourmet chocolatiers”, “Part-time primary school teachers”, or whatever.

Finding a job in New Zealand is extremely easy. Don’t let anyone tell you different. But being picky about what type of job you do is where you will make things extremely difficult for yourself. There’s no need to worry about the idea of not enjoying a job, because you are not committing to it forever. Remember, the conditions of any working holiday visa in New Zealand are that you cannot take up a permanent job.

So, instead of being a lazy backpacker scratching your butt on the hostel sofas, it’s time to widen your prospects, get out there, and find a job! Here’s just five reasons to be open minded when choosing a job in New Zealand.

1. Widen your options

Having only one industry in mind when looking for a job in New Zealand will only result in a lack of jobs available to apply for. Once those options are exhausted, you will have nothing left. Considering multiple trades will help you make the most of the thriving New Zealand job market and leave you with both hard-earned cash and unique life experiences.

2. Avoid creating yourself obstacles and excuses

When narrowing your options to only a few jobs, you are opening the door to the famous: “There are no jobs here” or “If those guys did not hire me, I will never get a job in New Zealand”. These negative trains of thought are only the result of a picky approach to the job search process. There are so many options to explore that you are sure to find something to pay the bills, if you keep an open mind!

3. Explore more

“Stubborn people don’t see the world, they see ‘a’ world.” Having an open mind will lead you to explore New Zealand in its entirety, travelling where job offers take you. Who knows where you will end up: that’s the excitement of a working holiday in New Zealand! It will also allow you to explore many different career paths so when you get back home you will have a better understanding of what you want to do. This will not be a leap of faith anymore, but a well-informed choice.

4. Be more proactive

A lot of people tend to be very passive in looking for a job. This often results in frustration and can lead to failure. By widening your options you will get much more to do, thus feeling like you have control over your job prospects. For example, one day you’ll have to write a CV for a building company, another day you will have an interview for retail, and the next day: a trial as a waiter. That’s what it is all about!

5. Find your style

After trying many different career paths, you will have a clear idea of what makes you tick. Maybe you are not as well organised as you thought and have found pleasure in nurturing your creative side? Maybe you have become much more confident and you now feel that standing in front of a classroom as a teacher is totally your thing! Forget the “Who knows what you want to do…” After trying so many different trades, you’ll know!
